Favorite Pasta Substitutes

As a former carb-oholic, I love my pasta! However now as a holistic nutrition specialist and a wellness professional, I am too educated to eat plain pasta. (plus I’m gluten-free) I understand that most traditional pasta is made with enriched flour and is highly processed and full of additives. Simple is always best. 

For all my pasta and carb loving friends out there, here are a few of my favorite pasta substitutes that your body will thank you for!


Trader Joe’s Red Lentil Pasta


The only ingredient in this pasta is lentils… simple and amazing!

This pasta will not spike your blood sugar levels like many traditional white pastas do, and is full of fiber!


Trader Joe’s Black Bean Pasta



The only ingredient in this pasta is organic black bean flour… again so simple!

This pasta contains protein and is packed with fiber.  


Zucchini Noodles


The only ingredient in this pasta is raw vegetables! 

This is a great substitute if you are looking to cut back on traditional carbohydrates and increase your intake of vegetables.

You can hide these noodles under a yummy red sauce or even a pesto sauce for family in your life who may be skeptical about the new zoodles. 


All three of these pasta substitutes are naturally gluten-free, and have even passed the taste test for my gluten loving friends!

Zucchini Noodles



One of my all time favorite things to eat are noodles! Going 100% gluten free three years ago ,I thought my noodle days were over - until I discovered zucchini noodles! YUMMY!! These noodles are so easy to make and really satisfy my noodle craving...without the carbohydrate hangover. Zucchini’s only have 21 calories per cup vs 180 calories in traditional pasta (on average). By switching up how I cut and cook my veggies - I find that I eat so many more! I typically eat 3 full zucchini’s when making my noodles...so many nutrients without all the guilt. 

Zucchini’s are loaded with Vitamin C, which protects us from free radicals and helps to keep our tissues strong. Manganese, also found in zucchini’s, help protect our tissues from free radicals and helps us produce collagen (amazing!). Lutein and Zeaxanthin, are two phytonutrients in the carotenoid family you may not have realized were so commonly found in zucchini’s, but they help keep our eyes healthy. Zucchini’s are growing in popularity right now for their weight loss benefits too! Enjoy raw zucchini sticks as a snack or add 4-6 oz of protein and make it a meal. 


How do you make these zucchini noodles?? Easy! Better yet- they cook in minutes. Start by washing your zucchini, cutting off both ends, and peeling your zucchini (although the skin is loaded with nutrients). Then using your Veggetti slowly start making your noodles! If you do not own a Veggetti, yet you can always julienne your vegetables as well. I like to cook my zucchini noodles in 2 tsp of organic ghee on medium heat until they soften. Eat and enjoy! There are several ways to cook your zucchini noodles, explore with different recipes and see what works best for you. Then branch out and be bold - experiment with different vegetables; surprise your family.


Side note - if you are in a hurry you can often find pre-made zucchini noodles at your local organic food store! Healthy fast food!
